Oracle have just publicised the first major version of its 9.x innovation release, MySQL 9.0.

MySQL 9.0 Innovation is a brand new version of MySQL that provides useful additional features and some alterations that may require attention when upgrading from an older version.

MySQL 9.0: New Features

According to Oracle, this first release of the MySQL 9.x Innovation series lays the groundwork for introducing new functionalities in subsequent releases.

Notable changes include:

  • Vector Data Type: A brand new Vector data type is now supported, allowing for efficient manipulation of large datasets.
  • JavaScript Stored Programs: MySQL Enterprise Edition users can now leverage JavaScript Stored Programs, enabling the creation of JavaScript-based functions and stored procedures that seamlessly interact with SQL.
  • Upgraded Libraries and Compliance: Experience enhanced performance and security with MySQL 9.0's adoption of newer library versions, including Linux 8 and 9 on GCC13 and Boost 1.85.
  • Enhanced Event Scheduler: The Event Scheduler gains new functionality, allowing users to prepare SQL statements for CREATE EVENT, ALTER EVENT, and DROP EVENT operations, streamlining event management.
