MariaDB recently...

  • At the end of 2023, MariaDB declared it was ditching strategic products and cutting 28% of its workforce. MariaDB announced it would stop providing its DBaaS SkySQL and Xpand which does not align with where the market and competitors, such as MySQL, are heading. 
  • Soon Microsoft will no longer offer MariaDB as a managed Azure service, Azure Database for MariaDB is scheduled for retirement by September 19, 2025. Microsoft has decided to invest their flagship offering of Azure Database for MySQL database, taking advantage of the advanced features, performance and improved architecture of MySQL.

 

MySQL vs MariaDB

  • MariaDB has diverged from MySQL and can no longer deliver drop-in compatibility. None of the modern advances in MySQL 8.0 are available in any version of MariaDB. These advances in MySQL 8.0 include Transactional Data Dictionary, Group Replication, InnoDB Cluster, Shell, DocStore, and XProtocol.
  • MariaDB is not capable of supporting mission-critical systems, instead, relying on a combination of third-party products, with no single point of support. MySQL Enterprise Edition includes all the required capabilities for Monitoring, Backup, and Security (Authentication, Audit, Encryption, Firewall, and Masking). Furthermore, MySQL HeatWave provides companies with valuable advanced features including MySQL HeatWave Lakehouse, where users can process and query hundreds of terabytes of data in the object store—in a variety of formats, such as CSV, Parquet, and Aurora/Redshift export files. 
  • The MySQL team develops all MySQL core technology; whereas, MariaDB depends on the charity of third parties for its core technology, including from companies it competes with, e.g., Percona (XtraBackup), Codership (Galera), Spider Engine, etc. MariaDB also depends on upstream MySQL for core technology, including InnoDB.
  • MySQL has a global team of support personnel available 24/7 which can service thousands of customers simultaneously, offering support in 29 languages. MySQL Support has direct access to MySQL Engineering to prioritize bug fixes and roadmap. MariaDB's very small support team cannot cover the breadth of issues that arise, as well as having a lack of core competence over various third-party products that are included in their database.
