How to modernise when SQL Server 2014 enters End of Extended Support

Attention all SQL Server 2014 users! The clock is ticking - extended support for this version ends on 9th July 2024, and it is time to take a look at the options that will keep your database secure and compliant. This blog post will guide you through your modernisation options and help you choose the right path for your organisation. You can find out more about your options here

Why Modernise?

Sticking with SQL Server 2014 after its support ends exposes you to security risks and leaves you without access to critical updates. Modernisation ensures:

  • Enhanced Security: Protect your data from vulnerabilities with the latest security patches.
  • Improved Performance: Benefit from performance optimisations and new features in newer versions.
  • Compliance: Meet regulatory requirements that may not be compatible with outdated software.

Modernisation Options:

There's no one-size-fits-all solution. But broadly speaking, there are five available approaches:

  • Remain on SQL Server 2014:
    • This option is only sensible with the support of a specialist third party (like DSP!)
  • On-Premises Upgrade:
    • Upgrade to a later SQL Server version for continued support. Newer versions like SQL Server 2026 offer longer lifespans, keeping you 'covered' for years to come.
  • Extended Security Updates (ESUs):
    • If the cloud isn't your preference, ESUs can extend support as a last resort. However, this is a temporary solution and doesn't offer the same benefits as modernisation.
  • Cloud Migrations:
    • Azure SQL VM: This option allows you to either upgrade your SQL Server version or stay on 2014 with Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for 3 years.
    • Azure PaaS: Shift your workload to a fully managed service like Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance. These services handle updates automatically, freeing you from maintenance burdens.

Whatever option you feel is best fit, you then need to go about doing it! Your options for this fall into two categories – do it yourself or enlist the help of a specialist who will help you to:

  • Choose the right path: Assess your needs and long-term requirements and recommend the best modernisation option for you.
  • Carry out a smooth migration: Our experts will handle the migration process efficiently and securely.
  • Conduct ongoing support: We'll provide continuous guidance and support to ensure you get the most out of your new database environment.

Many organisations won't have the time or skills internally to plan and undertake a project of this nature and will look to a third-party specialist to get the project completed swiftly whilst adhering to best practices.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
