Eye on OCI

Oracle CloudWorld 2024 Announcement - Oracle Database@AWS

"Never in a million years" or "This was bound to happen".  Which camp were you in? Well, we hate to say we called it, but when planning our Oracle CloudWorld session several months ago, we saw that Multi-Cloud was the direction of travel. This news from Oracle is very exciting as it gives further choice to customers.

Oracle has always provided choice on how to run its software, and this has just expanded further. It's probably safe to say that AWS RDS has one of the largest Oracle DB estates outside of OCI. The news will allow customers to use either Autonomous or Exadata Cloud Service, which, in my opinion, are differentiated from Amazon RDS. I think that differentiation comes in two forms. From a commercial perspective, RDS was just BYOL or SE included. With Autonomous and Exadata, you're using Enterprise Edition, which has some key packs and options, so in some ways, it will broaden the choice. If you also consider the recent changes with ECPUs, which lowers the cost for Autonomous, we may see customers switching from AWS SE licenses included to Autonomous, potentially with little cost difference. The other key area will be performance, as both of these solutions in AWS will be running on the Exadata hyperconverged infrastructure. The difference in performance, I believe, will be significant.

This, I'm sure, will be one of many announcements at Oracle CloudWorld 2024, and we look forward to hearing more from Oracle, but more importantly, from the customers and their stories.
