DSP-Explorer CEO, Simon Goodenough was interviewed by Cybernews about his thoughts on Cloud security. Read the full article here.
Following a time of influential global change, it is now vital for businesses to have both reliable and adaptable IT systems.
Various obstacles, such as cost or time, often force small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to look for various strategic IT solutions outside their company.
Simon Goodenough, CEO of DSP-Explorer, strongly believes that integrating an independent partner like DSP-Explorer is always a wise investment. For complete peace of mind, choosing an entire database managed service will always ensure full security and cost-efficiency.
Can you introduce us to what you do? What technology do you use to analyse vast amounts of data?
DSP-Explorer is a Data Management and Cloud Platform CSP delivering enterprise-grade support & consulting services for Oracle, Microsoft, and Multi-Cloud technologies. We occupy a relatively unique space in the market, with a focus on mission-critical databases across any on-premises or cloud platform, and continue to invest in our service portfolio.
I'm proud to say we have over 500 clients across the UK, Europe, and North America. With a well-established pedigree in our field, we strive to be an inventive, proactive service provider, priding ourselves on employing world-class technologists and using best practice methodology.
As a specialist multi-technology provider, we focus on Oracle, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud data solutions.
Which industries do you think should be especially attentive towards securing and managing their data?
The reality is that anyone, both an individual and a business, is at risk of data threats; there's no escaping it. But beyond the general issue of data security, some companies have a particularly pressing need to protect data.
The reasons for the increased risk are as varied as the industries affected… it could be because of their lack of protection and ease of access or the amount of data they have. At this point, we see the biggest cyberthreat in SMEs, IT companies, healthcare, legal sectors, government entities, and the fintech industry.
Have you noticed any new types of cyber threats emerge as a result of recent global events?
The pandemic certainly shifted working conditions on a global scale which opened doors for new possibilities of cyber-attacks. As many businesses have moved to an online working model, the need to secure their data is vital.
There is undoubtedly a great deal of unpredictable, unstable events, all of which have the potential to induce a rise in cyber threats.
In your opinion, what security measures should be in place to combat these new threats?
We can all agree that it costs an organisation more to lose data than to invest in quality cybersecurity. Investing in an independent, technology-agnostic partner such as DSP-Explorer, where there is no vested interest in the technology and only a focus on the solution, is a wise place to start.
This can be as simple as carrying out a database health check to understand the vulnerabilities of your database and any potential security weaknesses. Or, for complete peace of mind, it could be an entire database-managed service, where the MSP completely takes the reins, ensuring your environment is always fully secure, optimal, and cost-efficient.
What are the issues that come up most often when sharing and handling large amounts of data?
For most businesses, the issue is the lack of internal knowledge when it comes to big data. It's understandable considering the importance and the scale of data that must be adequately stored, managed, and analysed.
A case comes to mind where employees didn't comprehend the value of data storage and ultimately could not maintain sensitive data backups. As a result, it was extremely difficult to locate when this critical information was needed.
Many companies have chosen cloud solutions to enhance security, but is it truly a "one-size-fits-all" option? Are there any details that might be overlooked?
Cloud solutions are an excellent option for many. However, for those in highly regulated industries, their data needs to stay on-premise to comply with the latest regulations. Yet for the majority of industries, migrating to the cloud can be a fantastic way of boosting security.
At DSP-Explorer we've supported hundreds of companies in migrating their data and workloads to public cloud environments. Oracle, Microsoft, and GCP spend billions of dollars every year on R&D and are constantly enhancing their security. Therefore, it can benefit smaller companies to take advantage of their larger economies of scale.
What predictions do you have for the future of data security?
A prediction I can say with confidence is that the use of the cloud will continue to grow at a rapid pace. As a faster, more flexible, and cost-effective option, the cloud is an optimal space for huge amounts of data.
Another thing is the importance of AI in cybersecurity. Artificial intelligence will be the deciding factor in whether the sector can keep up with the security threats. I believe it'll eventually come down to bot vs. bot, but human intervention will always be required to fulfil the missing links bots aren't able to.
Would you like to share what the future holds for DSP-Explorer?
I'm very excited about the future of DSP-Explorer. We will continue to grow through strategic acquisitions and organic growth while continuing to raise the bar within the Oracle partner network. Not only will we be growing in numbers of customers but also internally as we expand our intern & apprentice programs to ensure we have the right skills for the future.
There are several strategic plans in the works and I'm excited for the future growth of DSP-Explorer.
