Solution: Data Platform Modernisation

BRITA - Transforming reporting and business intelligence

BRITA Group is a household name and one of the leading companies in the drinking water filtration industry. However, despite being a huge brand they are not a large organisation in terms of manpower, which means they are required to constantly optimise the value of every resource.

The Challenge

In 2012, BRITA decided to start investing in their Enterprise BI solution (Microsoft SQL Server BI Platform) to improve their reporting and business intelligence capabilities, which they set out to do with the help of a hired contractor. However, as the projects developed, it was clear that this single resource was in fact offering limited capability to deliver genuine value to the business.

“We decided that we wanted to try going beyond the single contractor scenario, to build a wider skillset in the form of a strategic partnership,” says Ryan Jarvis, IT Manager at BRITA UK. “We looked at finding an organisation that could help us reach maturity and improved overall value. After going through a tender process involving six different service providers, DSP came out the clear winner.”

Having a dedicated contractor may have seemed like a more cost-efficient solution initially, but in terms of knowledge and scope of abilities, the single resource option now quickly faded in comparison to this experienced partner team.

The Solution

BRITA and DSP started working together in early 2015. Ryan Jarvis describes the initial collaboration as a steep learning curve for both parties. “We discovered that we had many processes that seemed very simple on the surface, but were in fact highly complex and preventing us from being as efficient as we wanted to be. Without DSP’s technical knowledge we would have struggled to identify the best course of action to address those issues.”

Gradually gaining a deep understanding of the challenges BRITA face, DSP were soon able to start providing true value from the partnership.

“DSP's experience was a key component to the relationship. We may have known broadly what we want to achieve, but we often had no idea how to make it happen.”

DSP has since the start of the relationship been able to help identify a range of potential additional cost savings that BRITA were unaware of, by pairing their technical knowledge with a commercial understanding. This bird’s eye view of the business has helped in making strategic IT decisions that have brought BRITA to an increased level of maturity.

“Our relationship now is so much more than just client-and-supplier; it is a genuine partnership. It’s more valuable to us as it means we grow and develop as an organisation while working with DSP,” Ryan adds.

The Result

BRITA quickly recognised that making the shift from a single resource to a strategic partner relationship was the right decision. DSP’s business philosophy and flexible approach has helped bring the IT estate to a stable, well-structured and manageable position.

“DSP's support was outstanding,” Ryan concludes. “Everything came out exactly how we envisaged it – or better.”
